Terms of service.
Last updated 15 May 2026
These terms govern your use of Efterlad. By creating an account or keeping a subscription active you accept them. We have written them in plain language; if anything is unclear, write to hi@efterlad.com and a person will explain.
Who we are
Efterlad is operated by Efterlad ApS, a Danish private limited company (CVR 44 12 89 03), registered at Store Regnegade 12, 1110 Copenhagen. References to “we”, “us”, and “Efterlad” in these terms mean this company.
What the service does
Efterlad is a digital archive. You write letters, upload photographs, voice notes, and short videos, and choose the people who should receive them. We store everything safely on your behalf. Once a year we ask you to confirm you are still here. If a long silence passes without a response, your archive is released to the recipients you chose.
Who can use Efterlad
You must be at least 18 years old to open an Efterlad account. You must give us accurate information when you sign up and keep it up to date, especially the email address and any phone number you have linked, because they are how we reach you.
Subscription and payment
Efterlad is offered as an annual subscription at $99 per year (excluding VAT, where applicable). Payment is handled by our secure payment provider and renews automatically on the same calendar day each year until you cancel. You can cancel at any time from Settings → Billing → Manage plan; your access continues until the end of the period you have already paid for. The name of our payment provider is listed under “Sub-processors” on our Privacy page.
If you choose the “Going off-grid” option, you prepay for two or three years of coverage at once. During that window the recurring subscription is paused so it does not double-charge, and resumes automatically when the prepaid period ends. Resuming check-ins early does not refund the prepaid years; the runway you paid for stays yours.
VAT is calculated and shown at checkout based on your billing address. Where applicable, our payment provider handles VAT collection and remittance on our behalf.
Refunds and the right of withdrawal
Consumers in the EU have a statutory right to withdraw from a distance contract within 14 days. If you wish to exercise that right within 14 days of first signing up, write to hi@efterlad.com and we will refund you in full.
Your archive
Everything you place in your archive remains yours. You grant us a limited licence to store it, to make encrypted backup copies, and, when the time comes, to deliver it to the recipients you have chosen. We do not read, analyse, or share your archive for any other purpose, and we never use it to train any model.
You are responsible for what you upload. You agree not to upload material that is illegal in Denmark or the European Union (for example, content that infringes someone else's rights, contains child sexual abuse material, or promotes terrorism). We reserve the right to remove such material if we become aware of it.
How your archive is released
Your archive opens for your recipients only after one of two things happens:
- A full year passes without you signing in. We then send you a single email asking if you are still here. If we hear nothing, we follow up by email and SMS over the next three months. If you take no action in that window, the archive is released.
- You explicitly trigger release in advance through a process arranged with us in writing.
Your recipients never receive any contact from Efterlad while you are still here. There are no scheduled delivery dates and no public timeline; the archive simply waits.
If Efterlad ever closes
We have planned for this carefully. Efterlad has partnered with Aumento Law Firm in Denmark as our legal trustee. If anything ever prevents us from operating, Aumento holds emergency credentials and acts on our behalf: notifying you, releasing your archive to you in encrypted form, and where needed continuing the platform's promise so your capsules still reach the right hands. The trust is structured to outlast the company.
Account closure
You can ask us to close your account at any time by writing to hi@efterlad.com. We hold the archive for 30 days after a closure request in case you change your mind, then delete it. We may keep minimal billing records for up to seven years to meet Danish bookkeeping law.
We may close your account ourselves if you seriously breach these terms (for example, by uploading prohibited content) or if your subscription has been unpaid for an extended period despite repeated reminders. In either case we will write to you first and give you a reasonable chance to put things right.
Liability
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes your statutory rights as a consumer under Danish or EU law. Subject to those rights, Efterlad's total liability to you in any twelve-month period is limited to the amounts you paid us in that period. We are not liable for indirect or consequential losses.
Changes to these terms
If we change these terms, we will tell you by email at least 30 days before the changes take effect. If you do not agree with the change you can close your account before it takes effect and receive a pro-rata refund of any unused prepaid time.
Governing law
These terms are governed by Danish law. Any dispute that cannot be resolved through good-faith conversation will be decided by the courts of Copenhagen, subject to any mandatory consumer protection rules that grant you the right to bring proceedings in your country of residence.
