Cookies, briefly.

Efterlad uses a small number of cookies. Most are essential to keeping you signed in and your archive sealed. We also run ads on Facebook and Instagram, and to measure whether a visit came from one of those ads, we load the Meta Pixel, which sets one advertising cookie. That is the only non-essential cookie on the site.
The cookies we set
Authentication session
A short-lived authentication cookie keeps you signed in after you click your magic link. Without it you would have to request a new link on every page load. It is first-party, HttpOnly, and expires when your session does.
Heartbeat
A cookie called efter-active records the date you last used the site, so we know not to bump our internal “last seen” record on every page view. This is what powers the “sign in at least once a year” check. It is first-party and stores nothing more than the date of your most recent visit.
Payment checkout (only during payment)
When you go through our payment provider's hosted checkout page for a subscription or pause prepay, that provider sets its own cookies on its own domain to make the payment flow work. We do not control them. They live on the provider's domain, not ours. The name of our payment provider is listed under “Sub-processors” on our Privacy page.
Advertising (Meta Pixel)
We run ads on Facebook and Instagram. The Meta Pixel sets a cookie called _fbp so we can tell whether your visit came from one of our ads. It is set by Meta and lasts up to 90 days. This is the only third-party advertising cookie we use. We do not use Google Analytics or any other analytics service, and nothing about your archive's contents is ever tracked, measured, or shared for advertising.
How to control cookies
Every browser lets you view and delete cookies, and to block third-party or advertising cookies specifically. Blocking the advertising cookie has no effect on how Efterlad works. If you remove the Efterlad session cookie, you will be signed out and can sign in again to receive a fresh one. Removing the heartbeat cookie simply means the next time you visit, the database write happens a single time, then quiets back down.
